TOKYO FASHION WEEK ROUNDUP

The bright lights, big style of  Tokyo’s Fashion Week (or ‘Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo, as it’s officially known) is over for another season, so here’s a roundup of our favourite looks for S/S12!

Somarta

Heavily influenced by geometric op-art, Somarta’s collection was all about setting off block colours with constructed shape silhouettes and prints. Ladies who REALLY want to rock the look will need to stock up on #SRSLY industrial-strength hairspray though – hairstyles were pointy, angular and gravity-defying.

Jenny Fax

Inspired by Taiwan-ese born designer Shueh Jen-Fang’s childhood, together with articles from Japanese and American pop culture, Jenny Fax’s S/S12 collection was definitely one of the most unusual shows this season. Creating statements with a playful edge, there were oversized bows, manga detail and HUGE marshmallow-pink sleeves galore – we’re in love!

Banal Chic Bizarre

Harajuku streetwear brand Banal Chic Bizarre got Tokyo’s fashionistas talking with their moody, atmospheric show – not least because all of the models wore black crash helmets (team with a pair of the collection’s cargo shorts to achieve the ultimate #undercovercelebinpublic vibe!).

Christian Dada – Signal/Noize

Although this is only the second full collection of the brand, Christian Dada’s Signal/Noize saw a highly sophisticated creative line. Monochrome colours dominated the collection’s palate, with stylised deer skulls and black veils highlighting the themes of death and darkness. Spooky for spring? SO ON IT.

Eri Matsui – New Horizons of Sleep Research

An elegant, truly innovative collection fusing style and science, Eri Matsui’s uniquely-named New Horizons of Sleep Research experimented with sculpted space-age silhouettes and light-up LED dresses. Mind you, what else could we expect from the designer who created the world’s first zero-gravity wedding dress?
