Hey guys it’s me Loukia again. As I mentioned last week, today I will be giving you a brief introduction to my mate Popcaan….
That’s him there in the photo sat next to me. I know you probably thought that was JLO sat next to him, but it’s not, it’s me. It seems that everyone is talking about Popcaan this week, and in the words of Vybz Kartel, wah gwan Popcaan? Well today I’m going to tell you a bit about what actually gwan with Popcaan.
To put it quite simply, Popcaan is a don. Like I said last week, he is keeping the Gaza throne warm whilst Vybz Kartel is locked up (#freevybzkartel), but he’s doing more than keeping it warm to be honest – he’s pretty much claiming it as his own right now.
Being a long time dancehall fan myself, when I first heard Popcaan he reminded me of another dancehall artist called Black Ryno. With their unique, high pitched and eery voices they could be brothers really. As the riddims passed though, it soon became clear that Popcaan was destined for more than Black Ryno (who was destined to a swift exit from the Gaza team). Well last year, he well and truly made his stamp in bashment. He dominated the airwaves and dancefloors, with songs like Clean, Only Man She Want and a personal favourite of mine Ravin’.
Popcaan is tipped to be the number one dancehall don in 2012, so keep your ears peeled for his music this year. And if you haven’t already then you can download a brief guide to Popcaan by The Heatwave here.

We also have a lot of artists doing big things in the UK at the moment. I caught up with one of my favourite London dancehall queens Lady Chann, earlier this week before the release of her new single Equilibrium/Informer featuring Glamma Kid.
Loukia: Hey Chann how are you?
Lady Chann: I’m ok thanks. Really excited about my new single which is out on the 29th January!
L: Yes, your new single Equilibrium/Informer. I love it…Tell us about it…
LC: Well working with Glamma Kid was amazing – he’s such a legend. The tune is wicked. The launch party for the single, is on Wednesday the 1st of Feb at The Social, in London. Garage legends Bushkin and Fonti will be doing a 45 minute set as well. It’s going to be mad!
L: What else have you been up to so far this year?
LC: Well apart from going to the gym and eating KFC, I’ve been working a lot on my album really. I’m working with some nice producers and some good sounds at the minute. I’m just really looking forward to 2012…
