We became familiar with U.S. based, 18-year-old DJ/producer Triple Six Sound Club during weekly Tinychat party #CYBER_MONDAZE, where we were instantly taken by the subtle sophistication and creeping, ominous basslines of his live mix. Entirely self-taught, he got started on a cheap all-in-one DJ box set he got for Christmas at age 12, and began honing his production skills shortly thereafter. It was a mere two months ago that the Triple Six Sound Club moniker was born, and he will be playing Teen Witch’s Chicago club night CULT on Thursday (2/16) alongside other SuperSuper! faves Pictureplane and Top8, before heading off to SXSW to play some afterparties. LILGOVERNMENT: We hang out all the time… Tinychat, DM, text, FB chat; we chill URL constantly. If we could be meeting IRL for this interview, where would we be sitting right now?
TripleSixSoundClub: At Social Club in Paris. You know what it is.
LILGOVERNMENT: BUT IT BE MAD LOUD IN HERE :::YELLS::::
TripleSixSoundClub: 55% of communication is done through body language.
LILGOVERNMENT: One of my pals who has been producing for 13 years described your sound as “pretty tough and ethereal at the same time.” How would you describe your own sound?
TripleSixSoundClub: Dark vibes and deep bass. That can be said for my DJ sets and my own tracks as well.
LILGOVERNMENT: Who is your biggest musical influence at the moment?
TripleSixSoundClub: Right now it’s motherfucking French Fries. That man is a god to me. Most producers have some cool tracks out and then a few bad ones… French Fries is currently the most consistent dude in the game. All hits, no misses. His bass destroys sub bins and all of his stuff is mixed and mastered so well. It’s just beyond. So yeah.
LILGOVERNMENT: Mmmmmmh. French fries. Oh I’m sorry, what? Anyone else?
TripleSixSoundClub: Brodinski, Gesaffelstein, Ryoji Ikeda, the hardcore punk band Doom, Das Glow, Harvard Bass, anything that has ever been released on Sound Pellegrino, anything from the Club Cheval crew, and my homie Tennis Hoodman from Minneapolis.
LILGOVERNMENT: OKAY let’s play a game. WHO WOULD U RATHER? First one: Lil’ Kim (present day) or Nicki Minaj?
TripleSixSoundClub: Lemme get some Nicki. Biggie did sex stuffs with Lil’ Kim and look where he is now…
LILGOVERNMENT: Uffie or Kreayshawn?
TripleSixSoundClub: Whoa, this just got real serious, real quick…Kreayshawn, but she’s not allowed to talk or look me in the eyes. Can’t be wearin’ that nose ring chain thingy either.
LILGOVERNMENT: Drake or The Weeknd?
TripleSixSoundClub: To make sex with?? LOL okay… Drake’s 25 sittin’ on 25 mill… Tryna have dude take me shoppin’ after.
LILGOVERNMENT: Teki or DJ Orgasmic? Hahaha
TripleSixSoundClub: Teki is probably a good cuddler so…
LILGOVERNMENT: LOLZ I hear dat although I might’ve gone for that 3way action… and you know the soundtrack would’ve been killer! Okay, back on track city bitch, track track city bitch…What made you decide to start DJing?
TripleSixSoundClub: My first club experience. I can’t recall the name of the place; I wasn’t even high or drunk but it was total euphoria. Massive system, just a wall of subwoofers and it was like God was tugging me off. A ‘love at first sight’ situation.
LILGOVERNMENT: …Or tug at first sight. If I was going to interview people leaving the club after hearing one of your sets, what would you ideally want them to say?
TripleSixSoundClub: “Was that an hour long song? I couldn’t tell where one ended and the next began.” “I would let that kid tie me up and put cigarettes out on my forehead.”
LILGOVERNMENT: LOL, more please…
TripleSixSoundClub: “I can’t hear what the question is… I can’t hear anything; I’m fucking deaf!” “THERE IS NO GOD THERE IS ONLY TRIPLE SIX SOUND CLUB.”
