MOLLY SODA

Molly Soda

You know Tumblr right? Well, Molly Soda is at its epicentre. She’s got tribute sites (!) thousands of followers (!!) and gets regular shout outs from big-name bloggers like Tavi(!!!)This NY based student/artist/filmmaker is quite possibly the ultimate Tumblr icon. Molly Soda’s latest creation ‘Tween Dreams’, what she describes as a “crazier version of Lizzie Mcguire” in which Molly Soda plays every character, is a series of short films loosely based on her own tweenage experience growing up in Indiana, being insecure and going to the mall.

AK: Tell us about Tween Dreams…

MS: tween dreams was my senior thesis for nyu tisch

MS: i wanted to make a crazier version of lizzie mcguire using myself as every character. it’s loosely based on my tweenage experience growing up in indiana, being insecure and going to the mall

MS: i’m working on writing the next installment of tween dreams and hopefully will star shooting it in a few weeks when i’m back in indiana

AK: Indiana is random

MS: yes indiana is random but my parents are both professors and indiana university is there

AK: was there a lot of discipline in your house-hold, or was creativity something to embrace… What was your high-school experience like socially?

MS: my parents were pretty lax about stuff growing up

MS: they’re very liberal and were always cool with whatever my interests were

MS: although i did have a 1030pm curfew until i was 18 which was pretty annoying

MS: i didn’t have a lot of friends in my high school i was pretty angsty and felt i was above everyone ~*no one gets me*~ syndrome i guess

AK: Haha, did any pop-punk bands treat the syndrome?

MS: They probably just made it worse ha

MS: Times have changed i guess i’ve stopped caring about what other people are wearing/doing though

Bianca Stratford Prom DressAK: Omg, did you go to prom?

AK: Prom scares me like after watching Jawbreaker, I am officially not down for prom…

MS: hahahaha

MS: jawbreaker is a great movie

MS: prom isn’t how they make it out to be in the movies though

MS: i went to my junior prom but not my senior prom

AK: Lol, did you wear a dress like Bianca Stratford from 10 Things I hate About You?!

MS: oooh I wish I had worn a dress like hers I love that dress

MS: prom was pretty lame, but everyone should go anyway

MS: I wore a vintage 1850s dress, i still have it it was so beautiful

MS: egg shell blue, lots of tulle, sweetheart neckline, a bow

MS: i hope they havent seen those

MS: but they cant really do anything about it IM AN ARTIST MOM N DAD

AK: AHAHHAAHAHA!

AK: Do you think Tumblr- in a sense- has ruined any subcultures by exploiting them?

MS: if tumblr didnt do it something else would

MS: i try not to think about that sort of stuff the internet is supposed to be fun… right???

MS: i like people

MS: i love going out

MS: so no im not scared of the real world :)

AK: Yay, you don’t have Daria syndrome!

AK: Many teens do!

AK: You should write the cure to it

MS: i think it just depends on your personality
