CULTURE: SEASTEADING

Okay, so you’ve downloaded illegal MP3s from Pirate Bay, but have you ever considered being a real pirate? Ruling the high seas, answering to no landlubbers, and owning your own tiny, sovereign country/‘micronation’? Yes? Well, seasteading might be for you! #SPLASH

Seasteading is the creation of mobile or immobile territories that exist outside of established governmental law.  Whether it’s a cruise ship, an abandoned oilrig or a small island (artificial or natural), the idea is that you essentially run your very own micronation, which plays by your rules, and your rules alone!

Imagine your own massive ship, full of all your friends (on Twitter and IRL), with no parents, no laws and no bedtimes – just a 24-hour poolside rave on the open seas!  Want to duel your enemy to the death whilst eating a polar bear and marrying your sister? YOU CAN… for a price! The possibilities are limitless for the rich and brave pirates of the future!

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to survive in the middle of the ocean with any sort of permanence. Food, energy – and most importantly, high-speed Internet – are all issues that would need to be addressed. Luckily, the Seasteading Institute is here to help! Flush with eccentric dot-com billionaire’s donations, the Seasteading Institute is leading the way to establishing our new temporary autonomous zones on the sea. Get involved now, and you might one day get an invite to be a resident of Google Island. Or, naturally, make out with your grandma in a champagne-filled hot tub. At least it will be legal!
